SAIL is a true grassroots organization, having its beginnings in 1982 with a group of parents who wanted to develop housing and support services for their adult children with a psychiatric disability.

Together they eventually incorporated and became a not-for-profit organization and both established and composed the first Board of Directors of the agency.

They opened the first of several Community Residences in 1984, renting one house in Woodmere, NY which served 10 individuals. Today, SAIL owns 15 properties - a mixture of single family homes, two-family homes, small apartment buildings and office buildings. The agency also rents and/or manages 119 apartments, with a mixture of studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom apartments.

The people who live in our mental health housing programs are individuals, couples and families. Rehabilitative, support and clinical services are provided by our para-professional, peer, professional, and support staff in a variety of programs ranging from a full array of mental health housing programs, an Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) program and various consumer employment opportunities. On any given day, the agency provides these services to more than 360 different people in locations throughout Nassau County.
